A nice insightful look into the life of a working class umarried mother of the late victorian period who copes with her misfortune of falling in with the WRONG PERSON and struggles to rise from the situation towards her self redemption. Everyone can identify with this main character. It is cold and unsentimental. Very Victorian in its writing and very very real in its view. Absolutely unflinching in its view.
I got this novel to give me insights into the period. I found more than I was looking for and am very very well pleased as will anybody who cares to sit down and read this delightful novel.
Good look for the student of history interested in Victorian England. A joy for anyone interested in the life of women. And a very good moral novel that anyone will enjoy reading.

Esther Waters A Novel George Moore 9781142276904 Books Reviews
This novel was written by Irish writer George Moore (friend of W.B. Yeats) and made his career and his fortune.
This story contains a bit of 'Oliver Twist' and the pathos of Gaskell's Ruth. Yet i seems that sometimes Esther is enslaved by her own passion which exacerbates her poverty and all the hopelessness of being a woman without a husband. She faces her challenges and makes her choices realistically knowing that she cannot advance without a husband. Thus when she has the opportunity she chooses for the benefit of her son who she thinks has a better chance living with both father and mother in spite of the father's obvious character flaws. She does not consider that William is a liar, a drunkard and a horse racing gambler. Although finding some measure of happiness and satisfaction in marriage, she ends up back where she started as a servant in somebody's home but with an older friend with whom she finds solace and comfort. One could say that she found happiness in the end. William seems to have become a believer in the faith and her son grows up
to be a son in whom she was well pleased. We get a realistic view of being in service, being a wet nurse, being a dependent on workhouse charity, alcholism among the poor, etc. I think the details on horse race betting could have been shortened. Overall an enjoyable read.

The tale is of interest as long as it stays on Esther's story. Sadly it strays onto long discourses that makes their reader wonder if the story will ever continue.
I bought this book because I thought it was about a woman who was a wet nurse. Turns out, that's only a very small part of the story. The book is really more of a warning against the evils of drinking, gambling and pre-marital sex. It was interesting enough to keep me reading until the end, but it wasn't what I thought it was.
